About Us

Community Fridges TO is a Toronto-based mutual aid initiative created to nourish our communities and our neighbours. We firmly believe access to food is a right, not a privilege.

Our volunteers come from all over the city and work within their own neighbourhoods, collaborating with like-minded partners to place and maintain community refrigerators throughout the city.

These refrigerators provide neighbours the opportunity to donate food as well as take what they need, ensuring accessible food 24/7.

FAQs

What Are Community Fridges?

Community fridges are a mutual aid project that operates under a “take what you need, leave what you can” philosophy.

Community fridges are a resource for everyone, without assumption or policing of how much someone needs or takes.

Fridges and pantries can be accessed at any time of day, no questions asked or enrolment required.

Join us in caring for one another. Spread the word and contribute to your local community fridge whenever you are able.

What is Mutual Aid?

Mutual aid is the radical, grassroots act of communities coming together to meet survival needs, like food, housing, and healthcare, that are not met by existing social systems.

Mutal aid is solidarity, not charity.

The 3 Principles of Mutual Aid

  1. Mutual aid projects work to meet survival needs and build shared understanding about why people do not have what they need.

  2. Mutual aid projects mobilize people, expand solidarity, and build movements.

  3. Mutual aid projects are participatory, solving problems through collective action rather than waiting for saviours.
